Air Lift Suspension by Wayne Bushey

Riding on Air

The latest and greatest suspension mod to come along in years is Easy Streets By Air Lift air suspension for your 62-67 Novas. (Look at the photos at the end of this article to see the ride height and the show height.) This article will walk you through the parts and installation of this system. This table full of parts is our front suspension. The Easy Street parts kit for the front costs $525.00.

The rear suspension of our Nova is contained on this table. Easy Street's rear kit is $625.00 new rear leaf springs are included.

We begin by stripping our lower control arms clean. We always like to modify our lower arms for strength. I wouldn't suggest this for an original or restored car but if you are building a Hot Rod or street car this helps.

In the last photo we cut 1/8" plate steel to reinforce the A-arms like this. Be sure the arms are not bent before you start.

A piece of 1/16" steel is made to wrap around the bushing end of the A-arm.

To get the Nova down low we need to use 2" dropped spindles. This will give us disc brakes at the same time. This kit is NNN part # 67021 which costs $700.00 and comes with everything shown assembled. Unfortunately if you have disc brakes now these spindles will not work with any of those parts.

Moving onto the Easy Street kit, this air spring plate bolts to our upper control arm.

Two counter sunk holes on the plate line up with the lower spring mount holes in the A-arm.

Install the bolts like this.

The lower shock mount bolt attaches to the plate like this. Now you have a left and a right A-arm. The shock mount goes towards the rear of your car.

The upper shock mount will bolt on this Easy Street bracket which bolts fast to the stock Nova coil spring cover.

The coil cover must be cut. Draw a line across the bottom of the cover like our sample. Also mark the hole from the bracket to the coil cover.

We used a band saw to cut the cover A file dressed off the edge. Next drill a 1/2" hole through the coil cover for the shock mounting bolt.

The Easy Street bracket bolted to our coil cover.

This is our upper shock mounting point.

The air spring mounts to the Easy Street bracket on our upper A-arm.

First we place the roll over plate to the bottom of the air spring.

The air spring attaches with two bolts through the Easy Street bracket.

Another roll over plate attaches to the top of the air spring then the spacer top mount bolts on.

The top mount bolts fast to the air spring with these two bolts. Note the air fitting that exits the side of the top mount. The top mount attaches to the car with a piece of all thread rod. The all thread screws into this center nut welded to the mount.

The completed upper A-arm. The top mount goes up into the upper spring seat.

The all thread (from photo above) goes up into the shock tower and is held in place with a nut. We slid a piece of tubing over the all thread for a clean look.

The top mount slides into the spring seat. The A-arms bolt to the subframe just like they did before.

The completed assembly looks like this. A clean trouble free set up not only will make our Nova look great low but will ride great.

These are our rear top air spring brackets by Easy Street. These air springs and new Easy Street leaf springs will give your Nova a great ride.

The brackets slide over the frame rails. Two holes need to be drilled through the frame rails to attach them. The lower bracket bolts fast to the new Easy Street leaf springs we installed in the car. The air spring is installed between the two brackets.

Two holes need to be drilled in the lower shock mount bracket to bolt the lower bracket brace fast. We mounted new rear end bump stops to the frame rails. Our air line was routed from the top of the air spring into the trunk area. We covered the air line with rubber vacuum hose to protect it from any debris.

The inflated air spring takes on a whole new look. We were able to route our exhaust around the springs and exit at the side of the rear quarters. Always allow two or more inches around the air springs with your exhaust pipes.

Up front we ran the air line from top of the coil cover to the firewall. It's short and sweet. We also covered this air line with rubber hose. The connections were made under the dash and then run to the rear.

We designed this panel to hold all of our air management parts. This unit bolts to the stock 6x9 speaker mounting in the center of the car under the package shelf. One electrical solenoid for up and down for each front and rear system is contained along with two sending units for the remote gauges.

A spare tire view of the panel we made. If you mount the solenoids close to the wheels they say it will raise and lower faster. That's not an issue with us we want clean. Besides the system worked just fine the way we mounted it.

An option to the Air Management system is a remote control. I'll tell you I thought this was something I didn't need, but for the $260.00 I thought I would try it. I love this control. I did not even put switches inside the car to control the system I just use the key fob. This system comes with the four relays the receiver and a key fob. We mounted everything behind the seat. The antenna was placed under the package shelf.

We mounted the air compressor to the trunk side of the seat back brace. The air tank we mounted in front of the spare tire. The two air gauges we mounted in the glove box. I am very happy with the looks and ride of this new system. NNN is your Easy Street Dealer. We have systems ready to ship for your Nova. Slam your Chevy II for that great look then raise it for a good ride. The kit prices are Front Kit $525.00 Rear Kit $625.00, Air Management System $510.00, Remote Control $260.00, Dropped Spindle Kit $700.00

With your Nova sitting at this height it will be the talk of the car shows. People will stop in their tracts when they see your car sitting like this.

Ground clearance problems associated with a lowered vehicle are not a concern with this new air suspension system from Easy Street. Call NNN (717) 252-2383 to order your kit today. (If you are using a Heidt's front end we can put that on air also.)
